Retainers
Teeth move back towards where they started unless something holds them. A removable retainer is worn at night; a fixed one is a thin wire bonded behind the front teeth. Which you need depends on what was moved and how far.
Night guards and splints
If you grind or clench, a night guard takes the wear instead of your teeth. A splint does more than protect: it changes how the jaw closes, and is used where the joint itself is part of the problem.
Corrective appliances
Devices such as a Forsus or a twin block guide jaw growth in a child or teenager, and an expansion appliance widens a narrow upper arch. These are fitted at a particular stage of growth, which is why an early orthodontic look is worth one appointment.
